Description
We are two Black feminist creators who teach as faculty members in higher education at Ball State University who up until recently have kept our creative and academic lives separate. However, given the current climate, we believe as bell hooks shared, “community is a healing space.” Kat is a multidisciplinary abstract visual artist, and Robin is a watercolorist and digital illustrator. The Hue House is a space to create, teach, connect, and continue the dialogue between body, memory, creativity, and expression.
Thus, we are seeking funds to help cover the costs of renting and outfitting an art studio to work from and hold community workshops. The art studio would be in the Art Murray building in downtown Muncie, which is spacious, beautifully lit, and humming with the vibrancy of local artists and creatives. This space is large enough to accommodate all of our supplies and developing projects, store art fair accoutrement and products for sale, co-work and collaborate, experiment with new media, and convene creatives for events to foster community and co-creation. Given the spaciousness of the studio space, we will host bi-annual art exhibitions showcasing the artwork of those who’ve created pieces within the space.
With this funding, I will be able to achieve three goals:
1. Expand our collection of artwork for sale.
2. Establish a physical space for community events.
3. Organize a self-organized exhibition in the space for the community to engage my artwork.
Audience:
The audience for this project is anyone who values and appreciates abstract and Black figurative art, those seeking opportunities to engage in reflexive practice, and those interested in growing their creative community.
